The magnificent Bafa Lake, an area of extreme natural beauty is situated in the southwest region of Turkey. It is a long-drawn lake, approx. 150 km. south of Izmir and 90 km. north of Bodrum.
The area is a protected National Park and listed bird sanctuary surrounded by the mystic Latmos Mountains which rise up to 1400 metres high above the lake. The mountains change hue and colour from misty soft pinks to deep purple as the sun rises above them and this is a sight not to be missed. Bafa is an important area for the birdwatcher as it is on a migratory route. There are many rare birds that breed in this area some of the most important being the Dalmatian Pelican, Kentish Plover and Mediterranean Gull. The nearby Great Menderes Delta - is observed by ornithologists from all over the world coming every year to this bird paradise! This area forms one of Europe's biggest bird refuges and is part of the nature park 'Aydin'.
2000 years ago the Bafa Lake was a bay of the Aegean Sea called the 'Gulf of Lade'. Due to deposits of the river Menderes, the bay was slowly separated from the sea. This explains why the lake contains water with a slight salt content, in which mullets, sea breams, eels and carps are caught.
